TAMPA, Fla. — In a powerful display of solidarity, hundreds of law enforcement officers and community members gathered at Lykes Gaslight Park for the Tampa Police Department's annual Memorial Run, a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Ashley Bell, the daughter of a fallen officer, knows the meaning of this day better than most. Her father, a Tampa police officer, was killed in the line of duty in 1998. Twenty-six years later, she continues to be moved by the community's enduring support.
"It's very bittersweet for me, it means a lot for me and my family," Bell said, her voice reflecting a mix of pain and pride. "To see this many people still come out and support the community, support the fallen officers that paid the ultimate sacrifice – it's truly remarkable."
This year's event highlighted the stories of 32 fallen officers, each remembered through personal armbands worn by current Tampa Police Department members.
Deputy Chief Ruth Cate emphasized the significance of this tradition: "We will have 32 sworn Tampa Police officers wearing armbands for all 32 officers, so they will have each of their names on the armband."
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw, who has participated in the run for 28 years, noted the event's growing impact.
"Every year it gets bigger and bigger, with officers running, community members running, families running," he explained. "This is about the community and police coming together to honor those who lost their lives serving this community."
For Bell, the run represents more than just a physical challenge.
"I'm all about building rapport in the community, about having conversations and seeing what life is about," she said. "And to see this outcome – it's truly great."
With 1,500 participants, the Memorial Run stands as a powerful symbol of unity, remembrance and collective healing. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of Tampa's law enforcement community and the families who have sacrificed so much.
As Ashley Bell reflects, the event is a powerful reminder that some stories – and some heroes – are never forgotten.
