TAMPA, Fla. — A crash involving a Tampa police cruiser is impacting traffic Tuesday afternoon in Tampa.
The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. in the area of North Tampa Street and Woodlawn Avenue.
The Tampa Police Department said an officer part of their agency was responding to an emergency call about a man who was armed with a stick and threatening people off of Highland Avenue.
While driving westbound on Woodlawn Avenue, the officer crashed into a gray SUV that was going southbound on North Tampa Street, causing the SUV to overturn.
Both the driver of the SUV and the officer were taken to the hospital for minor injuries and a medical evaluation.
The suspect who was reportedly threatening people, identified by police as Kamal Johnson, 31, was eventually taken into custody after "resisting arrest," police said. He now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest without violence.
No injuries were reported in that incident.
The crash prompted a large law enforcement response. At least 20 cruisers and additional first responder vehicles were on the scene around 2:45 p.m.
As of 3:20 p.m., TPD said the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and North Tampa Street should reopen within the hour.
