TAMPA, Fla. — Two people are dead and another was taken to the hospital for treatment following a standoff in the city's Ybor Heights neighborhood, according to Tampa police.
Law enforcement says the incident began on Sunday, Jan. 2, when a woman accepted a ride from a male acquaintance. The man would then take the woman to a home in the area of E. 28th Avenue and N. 15th Street without her permission, according to police.
Hours later, police say another man was called to the house and an argument broke out. During the fight, police say the man who had driven the woman to the house struck the other man with an object, killing him.
On Monday, Jan. 3, the woman was able to text her family for help and police were notified. When officers arrived, they say the woman was able to leave the house safely while the man attempted to evade law enforcement by hiding underneath the home.
According to police, a robot was deployed to view the crawl space under the home. The man was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say the woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she is still recovering.
The department has not yet identified the people involved but said an investigation is ongoing.
