TAMPA, Fla. — A construction worker died in an accident Wednesday morning at Tampa International Airport, officials said.
The accident happened just before 8 a.m. near the Blue Arrivals lanes, located on the south side of Level 1 of the main terminal, airport officials said in a news release.
The victim, an equipment operator, was reportedly working on the airport's Airside A Shuttle Guideway Refurbishment Project before construction equipment fell off the track with him inside. On Friday, the airport issued an update identifying the man killed as 29-year-old Cesar Hernandez Donu.
He died from his injuries at the scene, according to airport officials.
At this time, the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority has paused all work on that project for "a comprehensive safety review," officials said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is reportedly leading the investigation with help from TPA police and the Tampa Police Department.
"TPA is committed to the highest standards of safety and is also working closely with the project’s general contractor, Johnson-Laux Construction, to fully understand what happened," officials stated in the release.
TPA CEO Joe Lopano released the following statement after the accident:
“We are heartbroken about the passing of one of our construction workers. We share our deepest condolences with his loved ones. Tampa International Airport is conducting a comprehensive investigation into this accident.”
