TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa General Hospital was ranked one of the best hospitals in the state in a report, moving up a few spots from last year.

U.S. News and World Report evaluated the 258 hospitals in the state with the Tampa hospital coming in at No. 2. Tampa General was also nationally ranked in eight medical specialties.

This is the ninth year the hospital has been a top-ranked facility and last year, it was No. 4.

“This significant national recognition is further evidence that Tampa General is truly an innovative, academic health system that delivers world-class care across the enterprise,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General, in a news release.

For specialties, the hospital ranked No. 6 in the country for obstetrics and gynecology and it's the best in the state, according to the report. Other highlights include the gastroenterology and GI surgery department ranking No. 15 in the nation and the highest ranked in the state. The ear, nose and throat specialty was also ranked highest in the state.

Tampa General Hospital is also ranked among the top 10% of U.S. hospitals for geriatrics, neurology/neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, according to the release.

“I commend our physicians for their tireless work in putting patients first and pioneering clinical innovations, both of which have driven these specialties at TGH to be among the best in the nation," said Dr. Charles J. Lockwood, executive vice president and chief academic officer of the hospital, in a statement.

The publication also ranked Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg as the top Florida hospital for kids. The report followed their annual honor roll of the country's 20 best hospitals, but no Florida hospital made that list.

Mayo Clinic-Florida in Jacksonville took first place with 10 adult specialities ranked nationally. UF Health Shands in Gainesville came in third. Also in the Tampa Bay area, Sarasota Memorial Hospital came in at No. 5, Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater was No. 11 and AdventHealth Tampa was No. 15.

Researchers took into account measures like patient outcomes, nursing staff, patient experience and services, among many other factors.
