TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Fire Rescue is commemorating the day one of their captains first reported for work 40 years ago.
Captain Daniel Herrero celebrated his 40th anniversary on the job Tuesday morning at Tampa Fire Rescue Station 23 at 20770 Trout Creek Dr.
Herrero walked in through the doors of a Tampa Fire Rescue station for the first time on April 2, 1984, years before the birth of his children Dalton and Peyton.
Since then, he has been known for his professional development and education work for the many recruits that have graced the eight stations he worked under.
"His commitment to the safety and well-being of our community is truly inspiring,” the emergency agency said in a statement. Whether battling blazes, rescuing those in need, or educating the public on fire safety, Captain Herrero has been a beacon of excellence in our department."
As the department continues to bolster its fleet and prompt response efforts, Herrero puts a battery in prospective firefighters’ backs.
“Be positive. Have a positive attitude and know that we're there for a reason,” the captain said in a statement. “The job can wear on you with runs all day and calls in the middle of the night, but you can control your attitude."
