Tampa police arrest man accused of leaving deadly hit-and-run scene

The man stopped at a nearby convenience store and ran on foot from Tampa police patrol units, a release said.

TAMPA, Fla. — A man sits in a jail cell after he was accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian with his car Thursday night on a Tampa roadway.

Tampa Police Department officials said 34-year-old Vincent Oliver drove eastbound at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday on Busch Boulevard near North 50th Street in a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta and hit a 23-year-old man walking across the road. Vincent kept going after the impact, according to a press release.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 23-year-old pedestrian, who later died at the crash site.

Authorities located Oliver at a convenience store, where he stopped and fled on foot. Tampa Police Air Service, K-9 units and other patrol units pursued and later found Oliver hiding under a car about one mile away, the release said.

Police said they took Oliver into custody and transported him to a local hospital after he told them he was acting erratically from ingesting narcotics. After he was discharged from the hospital, officials transported Oliver to Orient Road Jail.

He faces charges including one misdemeanor count of resisting officers without violence, one felony count of DUI manslaughter leaving the scene and one felony count of leaving the scene of a crash with death, among other charges.
