Tampa police: Driver arrested for DUI after hitting, killing man

The 24-year-old later died from his injuries at the hospital.

TAMPA, Fla. — A man is dead after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver early Monday in Tampa, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. on eastbound Adamo Drive just past 39th Street. According to police, 23-year-old Mical Scott was driving his 2015 Chevrolet pickup on Adamo Drive at the same time 24-year-old Pannel Datilus was walking in the roadway. Datilus was not in an intersection or crosswalk.

Police say Scott hit Datilus with his pickup, "propelling" him forward on the road.

First responders who arrived on the scene reportedly performed CPR and other life-saving measures on Datilus and rushed him to the hospital. He later died due to his injuries.

As police investigated, officers said they noticed the pickup's airbags had fully deployed and there was "heavy" damage to the front of the vehicle. This suggested speed may have been a factor in the crash, police said. The pickup has been impounded to be processed for possible evidence.

Scott was evaluated by officers who then arrested him for DUI. He was taken to the Falkenburg Road Jail. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues, police added.

The eastbound lanes of Adamo Drive in the area were shut down until just before 7 a.m. Monday.
