Tampa City Council rejects Bayshore high-rise condo plan

Developers have 30 days to appeal the decision.

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa City Council members said "no" overnight to a controversial plan to build high-rise condos near Bayshore Boulevard.

The meeting ran well into the morning with the 5-2 vote in rejection coming down just after 3:30 a.m. Friday.

The Miami-based Related Group wanted to build the condos on the current waterfront property of the Congregation Rodeph Sholom, located at the corner of Bayshore Boulevard and Barcelona Street, while still retaining the synagogue. This was a revamped plan after the city council last year rejected the original plan.

People lined up for hours to tell council members what they thought of the new plan, which included fewer condo units, a lower building height, more green space than what city code requires and improvements to surrounding areas.

Developers have 30 days to appeal the decision.
