TAMPA, Fla. — Frigid temperatures impacted the Tampa Bay area after a cold front swept through late Tuesday.

Several counties opened cold weather shelters for people who don't have access to sufficient heating or other accommodations.

The arctic air doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, at least for today. The wind chills have made temperatures quite unpleasant and being out in the cold too long can be dangerous.

For Citrus County residents, the weather shelter on Suncoast Boulevard will open its doors again at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Organizers say if you need a ride, the shelter partnered with Citrus County Transit to offer free transportation.

Hillsborough County opened its cold weather shelters last night for people without a warm place to spend the night. The shelters are available for adults who are unhoused or live in houses without sufficient heat and can't find another place to crash for the night.

Organizers say they expected high demand and limited capacity, so they encouraged people who need shelter to use all resources like friends and family as a first option.
