TAMPA, Florida — Some residents at an apartment in Tampa were forced to find somewhere else to stay after a fire caused damage to multiple units Thursday evening.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews responded just before 7 p.m. to an apartment on Niagara Avenue after receiving several calls about smoke coming from a second-floor unit of a two-story apartment building, the agency said.

Once the crew arrived, they saw smoke billowing from the building, the fire department said. Crews set up hose lines and were met with heavy fire conditions as firefighters began an interior attack.

Fire crews were able to contain the direct fire damage to one unit while surrounding units received smoke damage. First-floor units sustained water damage, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.

No one was injured during the fire, however, firefighters were able to rescue four cats and three dogs during the blaze.

HCFR's Emergency Management met with residents that were displaced and connected them with the American Red Cross. A fire investigator determined that the cause of the fire was due to unattended cooking.
