Community encouraged to support sole survivor of deadly train crash

Mi Casa has vowed to donate 20 percent of their sales to the family for medical expenses. This will allow Guillermo Gama to be transferred to a rehab facility.

PLANT CITY, Fla. — It’s been nearly six weeks since six people died in a train crash in Plant City. The sole survivor, 23-year-old Guillermo Gama, continues to fight through his recovery.

Gama was the only person to survive that crash. It was one that had the entire community heartbroken.

This weekend the community is coming together to support the 23-year-old. Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant has vowed to donate 20 percent of its sales to the family for medical expenses.

Currently, Gama is being cared for at Lakeland Regional Hospital. The 23-year-old is unable to speak or walk on his own. He sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Gama was admitted to the hospital with a brain bleed, a ruptured kidney and a bruised lung.

"He’s going to recover. He will recover.," his aunt, Bobbie Gama said.

His family plans to use donations to pay for a rehab facility. They hope this will give Guillermo the care so he can walk and talk again.

"He’ll want to move his mouth a little bit, but he gets lost and he can’t speak. But I know he understands me because I can see him trying," his aunt said.

His family hopes to transfer him to a facility where he can get more specialized care. The money raised in the fundraiser will support Gama’s medical expenses.

If you would like to support the family, the fundraiser is happening this weekend, Nov. 3-5. You can go to Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant at their Plant City location or Riverview location. The restaurant has vowed to donate 20 percent of all weekend sales to the Gama family.

If you can't attend, the family has an online fundraiser.
