Tampa Fire Rescue crews work to contain a gas leak Monday, July 8, in South Tampa.

TAMPA, Fla. — Roads have reopened and people are allowed to return following the rupture of a gas line in South Tampa, authorities said.

Tampa Fire Rescue crews were dispatched around noon Monday to the area of Asbury Place and MacDill Avenue after TECO workers installing a power pole hit the gas line, said Sylvia Vega with Peoples Gas.

MacDill Avenue was closed between Chapin and Alline avenues as Tampa Fire Rescue worked to contain the issue. People living within a 50-foot radius of the leak were asked to leave the area because the gas line is larger than a standard residential line, TFR spokesperson Vivian Shedd said.

The large radius is for others' safety, she added.
