TAMPA, Fla. — The suspect of a shooting died by suicide after a stand-off with police where he barricaded himself in his car, according to Tampa Police.

Police originally responded to a shooting on Nov. 1 just before 4 a.m. and found a Hispanic man in his early 60s with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was hospitalized and told investigators he didn't know who shot him or why, according to a news release.

As the investigation progressed, police named Michael Shaheen, 28, a suspect and identified the suspect vehicle as a 2007 silver Honda Accord.

On Nov. 5, officers were watching the Honda which was at a house on East 20th Avenue. Shaheen got in the car, circled the block and returned home. As he was pulling into the driveway, officers stopped him with the intention of seizing the car for a search warrant.

Police said Shaheen refused to exit the car after multiple commands to do so and the Tampa Police SWAT team was activated. Officials tried to work to take Shaheen into custody but he remained barricaded himself in the car.

After more than three hours of attempted negotiation, he stopped talking to officers. The SWAT team approached the car and found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Shaheen was transported to the hospital where he died.
