Hillsborough County deputy fatally shoots knife-wielding man

The deceased man had been previously taken into emergency mental health custody seven times under the Baker Act.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A Hillsborough County deputy fatally shot a man who was threatening suicide.

It happened Tuesday afternoon on Gregory Drive.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said deputies were dispatched when a family member called 911 saying Jesus Calderon was trying to take his own life.

When a deputy responded and tried to get Calderon to drop a knife, Chronister says he refused and aggressively approached the deputy. At that point, the deputy fired his service weapon multiple times -- hitting Calderon.

Calderon, 52, was taken to AdventHealth, where he was pronounced dead.

Calderon had been previously taken into emergency mental health custody seven times under the Baker Act. And, deputies say this is their eighth call for him acting suicidal with a knife.

The deputy who shot him is 42-year-old Master Deputy Kevin Stabins, who has been employed by the sheriff's office since May 2000. This is Stabins' first time using deadly force. And, Chronister said the deputy is incredibly heartbroken by the situation.

Stabins was suspended for five days in 2007 after video showed him yanking a crying woman from her car and slamming her into it. The woman had been speeding to the hospital to visit her father, who she thought had suffered a heart attack.

If you have suicidal thoughts, contact the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay at 211 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255.
