15-year-old girl charged with making shooting threat on first day of school

"I am deeply disappointed that such behavior surfaced on what should have been a positive and safe start to the school year," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

TAMPA, Fla. — A 15-year-old girl was arrested on Monday for making a shooting threat on the first day of school, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators from the School Threat Assessment and Response Team responded around 10:30 a.m. to Gaither High School on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa.

They made contact with the student, who reportedly admitted that she threatened to "shoot up her school" in an Instagram post.

She was arrested and charged with written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting and unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

"Today, on the first day back to school, we faced a concerning situation where a student made a violent threat on social media. I am deeply disappointed that such behavior surfaced on what should have been a positive and safe start to the school year," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "However, I want to express my sincere gratitude for our detectives' swift and decisive actions. Their professionalism and vigilance ensured the situation was handled promptly, keeping our schools and community safe."

The investigation is ongoing.
