Deadly multi-car crash jams traffic along I-4 in Plant City

A dairy delivery van was one of five vehicles involved in the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — One person is dead after a crash involving multiple vehicles stalled traffic along Interstate 4 in Plant City.

The crash happened before 8 a.m. Thursday in the area of westbound I-4 beyond Thonotosassa Road in Plant City.  A 52-year-old man died as a result of the crash, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

A 22-year-old driver in a van failed to slow or stop for traffic on I-4 and crashed into an SUV that caused a chain reaction with three cars ahead, FHP said in a crash report. A total of five vehicles were involved in the crash. The driver of the SUV later died.

A dairy delivery van was one of the vehicles involved in the crash, as Sky 10 video showed. The aftermath of the crash appeared to show multiple crates and cartons of milk strewn across the grassy median leading to where the van came to a stop.

At one point as Sky 10 was flying over the area, it appeared firefighters were working to extract the driver of the dairy van from the vehicle.

A woman involved in the crash was taken to the hospital, Hillsborough County fire officials said.

Traffic was backed up along westbound I-4 for hours due to all lanes being shut down. The roadway reopened shortly before 12:30 p.m.
