TAMPA, Fla. — Deputies are on the hunt for a driver who killed a woman in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in Tampa.
Shortly after 9 p.m., authorities arrived at the intersection of Lucy Avenue and Maydell Drive after receiving reports of a woman who may have been run over by a vehicle, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The woman was walking with a shopping cart in the northbound lane of Maydell Drive when she was hit by a truck also driving northbound, the sheriff's office explained.
Investigators are now searching for a charcoal grey Dodge Ram with a model year between 2002-2005.
"A member of our community is dead and, right now, we are left without answers. Fleeing the scene of a crash is not only reckless and cruel but also an illegal act that comes with consequences," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Our dedicated detectives are tirelessly working to bring justice to this heartbreaking situation."
Editor's Note: A spokesperson for the sheriff's office initially reported the crash happened shortly after 8 p.m. and identified a male victim. This story reflects the most updated information provided by HCSO.
