Demolition marks start of new multi-generational recreation complex coming to East Tampa

Altogether, the complex will span approximately 10 acres.

TAMPA, Fla. — A new recreational complex is on its way to the Tampa area, bringing with it many things to look forward to.

Tampa city leaders took a big step Wednesday toward a new, state-of-the-art recreation complex in East Tampa with the start of demolition at the Penny Saver Food Market.

"That's been my prayer," neighbor Evangeline Richardson Best said. "To see this place do a service for the communities."

Neighbors rejoiced as a crane first tore down the Penny Saver sign, then a portion of a building.

"Thank God it's gone. It's gonna be history," Annie Davis said.

The market, which is located next to Fair Oaks Park on North 34th Street, is a 1.8-acre property that will soon be part of the home to a senior center, recreation center, athletic field and exercise trail.

Altogether, the complex will span approximately 10 acres.

"This is going to be an incredible...recreation center with gymnastics, with dance, a senior center...," Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said. "We could not be more excited to have this day come."

The East Tampa CRA funded $1 million for the project with an extra $300,000 coming from Tampa's general fund.

"This is what citizens of East Tampa want and deserve," CRA councilwoman Lynn Hurtak said. "[And] this is something that East Tampa residents can enjoy and be proud of for generations to come."

There is no completion date yet.

Representatives from the city said it's finishing up negotiations with the firm handling the design. In addition, meetings for public input are still yet to happen.

City leaders and neighbors said it's also an opportunity for younger people to get active and thrive with the upcoming facilities.

The city stated in July it had closed in on the property. Councilman Orlando Gudes stated Wednesday that the area is set to be a mecca of East Tampa.

The city stated this was an ideal location for the complex after holding listening sessions with residents and neighborhood stakeholders.
