Two kittens were returned to Humane Society of Tampa Bay after being stolen from their cages.

TAMPA, Fla. — Two kittens are safe and sound after they were stolen from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay earlier this week.

The kittens, named Mitch and Marcus, were taken from an off-limits nursery at the shelter on Thursday. In a Facebook post that garnered hundreds of comments, the Humane Society said two suspects scouted the kittens from outside the room, then snuck inside and shoved the kittens into their backpacks.

Officers with the Tampa Police Department worked the case, using tips from the community to track down the kittens.

"We cannot thank every single person who shared, commented, and sent in messages for Mitch and Marcus’s safe return," the Humane Society said.

TPD has not released any further details on the case as the investigation is ongoing.

Mitch and Marcus were both examined upon their return and are doing well, the Humane Society said.

‼️UPDATE ‼️ A HUGE thank you for the Tampa Bay community and @tampapd - THE KITTENS HAVE BEEN RETURNED AND ARE SAFE!...
