'Thank you for your patience': Northbound Howard Frankland Bridge completely reopens

Two northbound lanes have been closed for several days after Debby washed away part of the highway's shoulder.

TAMPA, Fla. — All northbound lanes of the Howard Frankland Bridge on Interstate 275 have reopened to traffic Wednesday afternoon, the Florida Department of Transportation said.

An earlier post on X from FDOT showed crews working to put down new asphalt along the outside lane of northbound I-275 on the bridge. On Aug. 5, as Hurricane Debby moved past the Tampa Bay area, part of the roadway shoulder that butted up against Tampa Bay's turbulent waters was washed away.

As a result, roadway officials quickly shut down all of northbound I-275 to assess the damage and protect drivers. On Monday afternoon, two lanes were reopened while the two outside lanes remained closed.

Crews have been working since then to replace the embankment, reinforce it with concrete and reset the barrier wall.

The work concluded late Wednesday afternoon.

"Please drive safely and thank you for your patience," FDOT said in a statement.

Since the closure, traffic has continually been backed up on the Howard Frankland Bridge. Because of this, commuters to Tampa likely saw increased traffic along the Courtney Campbell Causeway and Gandy Bridge as many drivers diverted their usual commute.
