HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Two people have been arrested after officials said they ran over a Tampa gas station clerk with a car.

Just after 2 p.m. on Monday, deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a hit-and-run that left someone seriously hurt outside of a Shell off North Dale Mabry Highway.

During their investigation, deputies determined that after the car parked in front of the store, 24-year-old Jose Corbo, who was in the passenger seat, reportedly walked into the store, took two soda bottles and left without paying.

According to investigators, the store clerk confronted Corbo as he got back into his car, but the driver, 24-year-old Marie Uribe, sped away. Officials said Corbo held the store clerk's arm and pushed her out of the way as she tried to intervene.

The clerk reportedly lost her balance and was run over as the car drove away.

Officials say the store clerk was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries and is stable as of Thursday afternoon.

Uribe now faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury and aggravated battery causing bodily harm.

Authorities say Corbo faces multiple charges as well, including aggravated battery causing bodily harm, resisting arrest, petit theft and out-of-county warrant.

"This senseless act of violence left an innocent person seriously injured. We will not tolerate reckless actions like this that put lives at risk," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "We hope this arrest brings some measure of comfort to the victim as she recovers from this traumatic incident."

An investigation is ongoing.
