HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Cinco de Mayo weekend in Hillsborough County brought an increase in traffic stops and more than a dozen DUI arrests.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) said it conducted 47 traffic stops on Sunday, which led to eight citations and 41 warnings issued overnight.
HCSO also arrested 18 people for driving under the influence.
According to a news release, one driver had a blood alcohol content of .342 — more than four times the legal limit. Another was clocked driving at 109 mph in a 55 mph zone.
"Drinking and driving is always avoidable and never acceptable," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "It's deeply alarming to see people making such reckless choices, especially when the consequences can be so devastating."
HCSO will continue with increased patrols through Sunday night in anticipation of increased alcohol consumption. Updated numbers from the weekend will be released at a later date.
