TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies stopped more than 300 drivers and arrested 39 as part of "Operation Turkey" over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
It was a collaborative, multi-agency effort aimed at preventing impaired driving from Wednesday through Sunday, according to a news release.
During the operation, deputies, Tampa police officers and Florida Highway Patrol troopers conducted 330 traffic stops while monitoring for impaired drivers. They cited 21 people, gave out 309 warnings, arrested 39 on DUI charges and arrested 3 for other offenses.
“Thanksgiving is about coming together with family and friends. No one should have to worry about their safety on the roads during such a special time,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Our dedicated DUI Unit worked tirelessly to ensure that impaired drivers were taken off the streets, helping to protect everyone in our community.”
Tampa police officers also had their own operation called "No left overs" where they arrested 17 on DUI charges, 582 traffic warnings, 136 traffic citations and recovered nine guns, according to an X post. The operation was also from Wednesday through Sunday.
"I want to express my deep thanks to our deputies and partner agencies for their tireless work this past weekend. Many of them sacrificed time with their families to ensure the safety of others," Chronister said in a statement.
