HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says it is conducting compliance checks at registered sex offenders' homes ahead of Halloween.
In a statement, the agency said they're prohibited from handing out candy, displaying decorations or leaving their porch lights on during the holiday. This only applies to offenders that are on probation or community control.
"Each year, our deputies take proactive steps to protect the children of Hillsborough County by going door-to-door, ensuring that registered sexual offenders and predators are complying with the law," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "This effort reflects our commitment to creating a safer community, where families can feel secure and offenders are held accountable."
Last year, HCSO said it conducted a total of 808 compliance checks. Three offenders were arrested and charged with violations.
