TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County leaders want to help spruce up your neighborhood with a little extra cash through mini-grants.
Neighborhoods can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to either make improvements or strengthen the community.
At the Wellswood neighborhood in Tampa, they've gotten grants in the past to paint murals on the civic center building and in the street for traffic calming. The most recent grant was used for an oral history project that is posted online.
Tina Hurless, the secretary for the Wellswod Civic Association, spoke on the impact the grants can have on the community.
"So we were able to get 10 members of the community to come in and tell us stories about how Wellswood was when they were growing up and they first moved in here," she said. "So it's been fascinating to learn more about the stories of the neighborhood and it really allows us to get a deeper feeling about the community itself when you're living here."
Stephanie Agliano works for the county as the neighborhood liaison. She explained that the grants can fund projects that will benefit generations to come.
"We want projects that will leave legacies, projects that will bring the community together and, you know, have that sense of pride," Agliano added.
She says the county has $75,000 to give out, but the deadline to apply is coming up on Nov. 15. If you want to get your neighbors together and come up with your own project, click here for a link to the application.
