TAMPA, Fla. — More than a month after an 'ambush' hurt two Hillsborough County deputies, the sheriff's office announced a milestone happening soon in the recovery journey.
Even after Deputy Manny Santos was released from the hospital, Corporal Carlos Brito kept receiving treatment and surgeries for his leg, which was hurt in the attack.
But now, the 39-year-old is expected to be released from the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Largo – just in time to spend the holidays at home with his family.
"As we approach the holiday season, it brings me immense joy to share that Corporal Brito is returning home to his loved ones after his courageous journey through rehabilitation. While the road to recovery is ongoing, his homecoming during this special time is the greatest gift we could have imagined," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "It is an honor to witness Corporal Brito's strength and determination as he continues on his path to healing.
"I can't say enough about the community's unconditional support during this time. Thank you to all who have rallied behind him in this challenging time."
Santos and Brito found themselves targeted by 28-year-old Ralph Bouzy, who is accused of using his car to ram into them. He's now facing multiple counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
On Nov. 9, both Brito and Santos responded to a 911 call from Bouzy's mother. She said her son, who lives with her, was acting "irrational and violent," and she was in fear for her life.
Brito and Santos tried to make contact with Bouzy, who was sitting in his car in the Heather Lakes area home's driveway. After refusing to interact with deputies, Bouzy drove off.
He would soon return, however. This time, he was speeding back, according to the sheriff's office. Seconds after narrowly missing two other deputies, Chronister said Bouzy intentionally aimed his car toward Brito and Santos, ultimately hitting them and pushing them between his car and one of the deputy's marked SUVs.
Bouzy was tased and arrested by the other two deputies.
