SEFFNER, Fla. — Hillsborough Sheriff's deputies arrested a high school student for bringing a gun to school.
A school resource deputy received a tip from administration that a 14-year-old brought a firearm to Armwood High School's campus on Monday afternoon. 10 Tampa Bay is not naming the teen due to his age.
When approached by a deputy, the boy refused to drop his backpack and tried to run down the hallway. The teen was tased and the deputy found a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun inside, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
"Bringing a weapon onto a school campus is not only illegal but endangers the lives of students and staff and will not be tolerated in Hillsborough County," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "This incident could have resulted in far more dangerous consequences. We are committed to ensuring that our schools remain safe environments for everyone."
The 14-year-old was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and transferred to the Juvenile Assessment Center. He is facing charges of possession of a firearm on school property and resisting an officer without violence.
