Truck crash triggers domino effect on I-275 in Tampa

Serious and minor injuries were reported.

TAMPA, Fla. — A pickup truck driver didn't slow down for backed-up traffic ahead of him Wednesday morning on Interstate 275, causing a multi-vehicle crash that caused delays for hours, troopers said.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Armenia Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the Ford F-250 driver, a 20-year-old from Lake Placid, Florida, crashed into the back of a Ford F-150 truck, causing them to travel into the interstate shoulder and against a concrete barrier wall.

In the moments thereafter, the F-150 was redirected onto the interstate where it hit a Dodge Challenger. That truck then was hit by a dump truck, causing both to overturn and the dump truck to spill its load of sand.

The Tampa Police Department earlier reported diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway, as well.

Several lanes were shut down to traffic until about 10:45 a.m., causing a backup that extended down the interstate toward and past I-4.

The driver of the F-150 truck, a 27-year-old from Tampa, suffered serious injuries. Others, including the 20-year-old man, a 47-year-old Tampa woman driving the Challenger and a 42-year-old Tampa man driving the dump truck, suffered minor injuries.
