TAMPA, Fla. — As the sun came up Monday over Tampa's Davis Islands, residents awoke to flooded streets due to heavy rainfall and storm surge from Hurricane Debby.
Drone footage taken by Filipe Fulgencio shows Davis Islands streets completely covered in dirty, murky floodwaters. Tampa Electric (TECO) reported more than 150 customers on Davis Island were without power, as of this writing. At least one outage was caused by reported fallen tree limbs.
Crews are reportedly heading to the area, and customers can expect power to be restored by 8 p.m. Monday.
It's not just Davis Islands dealing with flooding from Debby. Parts of nearby Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa are still closed due to flooding from the storm.
Downtown Tampa, which is prone to flooding during a typical rainy season, also has seen several streets flooded, according to this interactive map from city leaders. The flooded streets extend beyond the immediate downtown area. Parts of Dale Mabry Highway are also seeing flooding.
Over the last two days, Tampa has seen close to 7 inches of rain because of Debby, which reached hurricane strength as a Category 1 storm before landfall Monday. It has since weakened back to a tropical storm as it moves inland to Florida's east coast. With outer rainbands still expected to move over the area, Tampa could see a couple more inches of rainfall from Debby.
Thousands of people are sitting in the dark across the greater Tampa area. TECO reports as of 11:30 a.m. that 6,644 customers are without power.
