TAMPA, Fla. — A 22-year-old man was arrested following a crash that killed a woman and injured a man Monday morning on Dale Mabry Highway, according to the Tampa Police Department.
The two-car crash happened around 10:25 a.m. at North Dale Mabry Highway and West South Avenue.
Police said 22-year-old Andy Robaina was seen driving a 2011 BMW 335i southbound on Dale Mabry Highway next to another car he appeared to be racing.
As a man in his 70s and his passenger, a woman in her 60s, went to drive a 2015 Nissan Versa across Dale Mabry Highway, their car was hit by Robaina, according to authorities.
Officers arrived to find the woman with life-threatening injuries and the man with non-life-threatening injuries. They were both transported to a local hospital where the woman was pronounced dead. The man remains hospitalized and is stable.
Police said Robaina was not injured and remained at the scene after the crash.
Following an investigation, Robaina was arrested and charged with a felony count of vehicular homicide and a misdemeanor count of unlawful racing on a highway.
The northbound and southbound lanes of Dale Mabry Highway between West Hillsborough Avenue and West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard were shut down for several hours. The roadway has since reopened to traffic.
Police are now searching for the driver of a dark-colored vehicle that was seen racing Robaina. Officers said the second driver narrowly missed the victims' Nissan and did not stop or return to the scene.
Anyone with information about the driver is asked to call the Tampa Police Department's non-emergency number at 813-231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 800-873-TIPS (8477) or via Tip411.
