AKC all-breed dog shows kick off Thursday

The AKC all-breed dog shows will take place at the Florida State Fairgrounds starting Thursday.
Rufus, a Bull Terrier is honored during the AKC Humane Fund Award for Canine Excellence Presentations during the second annual "Meet the Breeds" showcase of cats and dogs at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on October 17, 2010 in New York City. "Meet the Breeds" is hosted by The American Kennel Club and Cat Fanciers Association, and 160 dog breeds and 41 cat breeds were presented this year.

Tampa, Florida -- Florida dogs and their owners will get their chance to strut their stuff at the annual all-breed dog shows Thursday through Sunday at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall in Tampa.

Approximately 1,500 dogs will compete each day for the chance to win Best in Show.

Other highlights include:

- Thursday-Sunday: More than 100 different dog breeds to meet and greet. Find the right breed for your lifestyle and speak with breeders and owners. (Thurs-Sun)

- Thursday-Saturday: See owner-handlers compete in a special new series called the National Owner-Handled Series. They're striving for a spot in the Finals at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando in December.

- Saturday: AKC Canine Good Citizen Test - Watch dogs demonstrate their good manners in this 10-step test.

- Friday & Saturday: Special competitions for puppies age 4-6 months.

Show hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Tickets are $5 for adults, children are free.
