HCSO issues over 2,000 warnings to drivers illegally passing school buses with stop arms extended

Starting Thursday, Sept. 12, the sheriff's office says any driver that passes a school bus with its stop arm out will receive a ticket.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — With schools back in session, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is reminding drivers to be cautious after the agency says it issued more than 2,000 warnings related to traffic violations with school buses.

In a news release from the agency, HCSO says it has issued 2,391 warnings between Monday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 15 related to drivers passing a school bus with its stop arm extended, which is a traffic violation.

Starting Thursday, Sept. 12, the sheriff's office says any driver that passes a school bus with its stop arm out will receive a ticket.

"Our children's safety is non-negotiable," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Following school zone speed limits and listening to crossing guards is essential to keeping our students safe."

HCSO explains the buses are now carrying stop-arm cameras, which can track the license plates of those who illegally pass stopped school buses.

"Passing a school bus with the stop arm extended is not just a traffic violation, it puts children in danger," Chronister said. "Which is why this isn't just about following the law. It's about protecting our kids and giving parents the peace of mind they deserve."
