PLANT CITY, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday after authorities found a gun in his car on a school campus, the Plant City Police Department reports.
Police responded just after 11 a.m. to Simmons Career Center along with school security and members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
A security officer first contacted the student who reportedly admitted to having a firearm in his car.
Police said they searched the car and found a loaded 9mm handgun, a magazine and 26 rounds of ammunition.
The teen was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property and minor in possession of a firearm.
" Protecting the well-being of everyone on campus remains our highest priority," the police department wrote.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Plant City Police Department at (813) 757-9200.
This arrest comes as law enforcement officers across the Tampa Bay area have responded to multiple online school threats in the past several weeks.
On Friday, Pasco County and Hillsborough County school districts sent emails to parents urging them to explain to their children the repercussions of making school threats online.
