AVON PARK, Fla. — The Highlands County Sheriff's Office has launched a death investigation after children found skeletal human remains at an abandoned home on Memorial Drive in Avon Park.
The children were playing inside the home before finding the remains Thursday afternoon, the sheriff's office said on Facebook. Deputies say the remains appear to have been inside the home for well over a year.
The investigation reportedly revealed that the person was likely using the abandoned home as a shelter. At this time, detectives are working to identify the person, and the medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death, the sheriff's office said.
Anyone with information on the remains can call 863-402-7250 or email detectives here.
