AVON PARK, Fla. — An Avon Park woman is recovering after an alleged home intruder shot her in the face. The intruder is dead after he was "cut to pieces" by the woman's husband, Highlands County Sheriff Paul Blackman said.
In a short video posted on social media overnight Friday, Blackman said the sheriff's office's investigation began around 8:30 p.m. Thursday after deputies were called to a home on Joe Hilton Street.
Once deputies arrived, they found a man and woman, both 69 years old inside with potentially serious injuries.
The sheriff said the man told deputies another person, later identified as 62-year-old Lindsay Glenn, was dead inside the home.
According to Blackman, Glenn "used a ruse to gain entry into the victim's residence." Once inside, Glenn reportedly took out a gun and shot the woman in the face.
As soon as the man saw that Glenn had shot his wife, he grabbed a "seven-inch garden knife" and "went to work" attacking Glenn.
"Once armed with the knife, he went to work on Mr. Lindsay Glenn," Blackman said. "Ultimately, the suspect Lindsay Glenn was cut to pieces and was very much deceased by the time the deputies could get him."
According to the sheriff, Glenn had been convicted of at least 12 different felonies, including robbery and burglary. He has spent at least "six stints" in state prison.
"I would like to commend the male victim for his bravery and quick action in defending his wife and their home," Blackman said in closing. "We will pray for his wife that she has a fast and full recovery."
The investigation is still ongoing and preliminary information could change.
