BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — A Hernando County high school student is facing charges after authorities say they made an online threat to "shoot up" their school.
The sheriff's office says they were contacted by the FBI on Monday regarding a tip they received about an Instagram post making a threat to Central High School in Brooksville.
The post read: "This is how I'm going to shoot up Central High School Lunch B December 3rd, 2024."
Investigators tracked where the post came by finding the owner's I.P. address at a home on Chaucer Drive in Spring Hill.
Deputies identified a 16-year-old student as a possible suspect. 10 Tampa Bay is not identifying the student due to their age.
HCSO says the 16-year-old admitted to making the post, saying it was made as a joke and they thought "it would be funny."
The teen was arrested and charged with written threats to kill/injure. He was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where after processing he was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Ocala.
