SPRING HILL, Fla. — A Spring Hill student was placed in protective custody after bringing a pellet gun and pocket knife to school on Wednesday, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.
A 10-year-old student at Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics was detained after another student notified the school resource deputy and principal about a possible firearm.
The sheriff's office said the resource deputy immediately contacted the student in question and confiscated a pellet gun and knife.
The student did not make any threats to other students and/or to staff members, nor did she display the pellet gun or pocket knife, the news release explained.
An investigation is underway to determine where she obtained the items from and what her intentions were.
Back in September, a 13-year-old in Hernando County was arrested after reportedly making threats to shoot teachers at school. The student faced a charge of sending a threat to conduct a mass shooting.
The investigation began around 1:10 p.m. Sept. 23 after deputies received a call from a parent of a student who attended Winding Waters K-8 in Weeki Wachee. They say two of her child's classmates were threatening to cause a school shooting, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said previously in a statement.
The parent's student told authorities they were on a FaceTime call with two other classmates and saw them play with what looked like a real gun while making threats to shoot several teachers when they got back to school, deputies said.
