Hernando County deputies charge man with shooting his girlfriend during a heated argument

The man claimed he shot the victim by accident, according to a news release.

SPRING HILL, Fla. — Hernando County deputies arrested a Spring Hill man after they found a woman dead in his home Wednesday night.

Deputies responded to a call around 10:50 p.m. reporting a shooting at a home on St. Ives Boulevard within the Pristine Place community in Spring Hill, the sheriff's office said.

When deputies got there, they found Roland Maurice Akins, 61, and a woman dead with a gunshot wound inside the home. Officials did not specify where in the house she was found.

Akins told deputies the woman was his girlfriend and had been holding a gun during a heated argument between them, the release said.

Akins told investigators that's when he tried to disarm the woman and the gun accidentally went off, striking her. Deputies did not say where the woman was shot.

Adkins was arrested and charged with homicide. He was transported to the Hernando County Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
