SPRING HILL, Fla. — Firefighters were able to save an elderly woman who was inside a Spring Hill home that was on fire Sunday afternoon, officials say.

At 12:44 p.m., crews received a call regarding a report of an automatic fire alarm in the 1400 block of Apricot Lane, Hernando County Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the front of the home, authorities say.

Initial reports indicated the people who lived in the home already got out, but when firefighters began to put out the fire, they found the woman still inside of the "smoke-filled home."

After the woman was rescued, the fire was reportedly quickly extinguished and crews confined the fire to the kitchen area around the stove.

HCFR says cooking was the cause of the fire.

There were no injuries to any firefighters or pets, but the woman rescued was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation.

"HCFR would like to remind the community that cooking fires are the number one result of home fires in the U.S.," the agency wrote in the Facebook post. "The 2023 Fire Prevention week campaign that just wrapped up October 14, 2023, focused on how Cooking Safety starts with YOU."
