BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says on Thursday night, its helicopter landed in a field near Brooksville Elementary School after it began having issues.
The sheriff's office says its helicopter was helping deputies look for a wanted person when the pilot and tactical flight officer onboard told dispatch they were having problems and needed to land.
They flew away from the populated area of Brooksville and headed toward an open area to land without endangering people, according to a press release.
The sheriff's office says at about 10:15 p.m. they were able to land in a field near Brooksville Elementary School.
Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene to check out the pilot and flight officer, the sheriff's office said. They were both okay, according to investigators.
The OH-58 helicopter stayed there overnight, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office says its aviation mechanic and chief pilot headed back out to the scene Friday morning to determine what was wrong with the helicopter. If it can't be repaired there, it will have to be brought back to the hangar, according to the sheriff's office.
