HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — A little girl has died days after fighting for her life in "extremely" critical condition in the hospital after nearly drowning in a swimming pool at a home in Hernando County, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies said the toddler's death was due to "medical complications" as a result of the "tragic" drowning accident.
It happened around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Deltona Boulevard in Spring Hill. A woman called 911 saying she had been told by a neighbor that a toddler had possibly drowned in a swimming pool, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Deputies said as the woman was on the phone with the 911 operator, she went to the home to help render aid since she is a nurse. She took over CPR until first responders arrived.
When they arrived, first responders took over life-saving measures and quickly rushed the little girl to Oak Hill Hospital. Because of her serious condition, she was later taken to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.
The little girl was in "extremely" critical condition until her death on June 25, the sheriff's office said.
"Preliminary investigation reveals the drowning was nothing more than a tragic accident," the agency said in part in its release on Wednesday. Deputies added the case is still under investigation.
