BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Several cats and dogs are now safe after Hernando County Fire Rescue says it responded to a kitchen fire Monday afternoon.
According to a post on the agency's Facebook page, the fire started just after 1 p.m. at a home in Brooksville located off of Roper Road and Haugan Lane. All occupants inside the house evacuated, according to initial reports.
When HCFR arrived, they reportedly found heavy fire in the kitchen and began performing an "aggressive offensive strategy" to take out the flames. Investigators determined the fire began from cooking.
Photos on the social media post show inside the kitchen where you can see the flames burned through the roof and caused a microwave to fall on top of the stove.
Rescue crews were able to save five dogs and three cats from the home. Pictures show crew members providing oxygen to some of the animals who officials say are doing well.
No humans were reported injured from the fire. Fire rescue says the Red Cross is now assisting the homeowners.
