Fort Myers, Florida - A millionaire retiree convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his wife has been sentenced to 35 years in prison. Sixty-six-year-old Donald Moringiello of Fort Myers Beach was convicted in July in the 2002 slaying of 57-year-old Hattie "Fern" Bergeler-Moringiello. Her body was tied to concrete blocks and dumped in the Estero Bay behind the couple's home.Moringiello maintained his innocence during yesterday's sentencing hearing. His attorneys say they will appeal his conviction.Bergeler-Moringiello was shot four times. Her badly decomposed body surfaced later seven houses away from the couple's 895-thousand dollar home.Moringiello is a retired aeronautical engineer. Defense attorneys suggested that the real killer was Moringiello's son, who died of a heroin overdose in November 2003.
