Former Stalag 17 prisoner Frank Grey dies at age 90

The man who was held in Stalag 17 by the Germans in World War Two and known as the "Grey ghost" for his ability to avoid detection and escape has died.

Jacksonville Beach, Florida - The man who was held in Stalag 17 by the Germans in World War Two and known as the "Grey ghost" for his ability to avoid detection and escape has died. Frank Grey died Sunday of heart failure in Jacksonville Beach. The 90-year-old served 20 years in the Air Force and was a veteran of both World War Two and the Korean War. Grey was a tail gunner on a B-17 of the 92nd Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force in England when his plane was shot down during World War Two. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Purple Heart and the POW Medal. He later served on a B-29 crew, surviving 57 bombing missions over North Korea. His exploits at Stalag 17 were detailed in a 2004 book, "The Flame Keepers," by Ned Handy. Grey, a longtime resident of Jacksonville Beach, was born in Welch, West Virginia, on October first, 1915.He is survived by his wife and three children.
