The rescue said some people questioned if the strange-looking animal was a Chihuahua or a chupacabra -- a creature of American folklore. But the rescue determined she was a hairless raccoon who likely suffered from alopecia or a genetic mutation.

She was also very sick when the rescue got her. The group said she arrived Sunday and her health had since been declining. The rescue said she died late Wednesday night.
