Military Day at the Florida Capitol

Tuesday was designated Military Day and the Florida National Guard was out in force in the Capitol Courtyard to display some of its high-tech equipment.

Tallahassee, Florida -- It's a special day for veterans at the state Capitol.

Tuesday was designated Military Day and the Florida National Guard was out in force in the Capitol Courtyard to display some of its high-tech equipment.

Some people climbed aboard the M-1025 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle - a 1 ¼ ton transport vehicle equipped with a five-foot-long, .50 caliber machine gun that can fire rounds more than four miles.

It was an opportunity for people to get a closer look at the National Guard's weapons and equipment, and meet some of the soldiers.

The Florida Senate also passed a resolution honoring Vietnam veterans 40 years after the end of that war.

Sen. Greg Evers said too many Vietnam Veterans were not welcomed home at the end of their service and he wanted to address that.

"Today we have an opportunity to remedy a wrong. We have an opportunity to recognize our returning heroes. So 40 years later we finally say, welcome home. Yo!"

The Senate resolution declares March 30 as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" - the 40th anniversary of the end of the war.
