Miami, Florida -- Sea turtles are starting to hatch here in Florida!
A live-streaming webcam on a beach in the Florida Keys recorded about 100 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings emerging from their nest. You can see them push their way through the sand and to the ocean under faint moonlight.
The camera uses infrared lighting so the baby turtles won't be confused by artificial light.
"That is so important because it does not disturb any of the activities of the turtle trying to find an ambient light of the moon," said Harry Appel of the Save-A-Turtle organization.
The webcam is part of ongoing efforts in the Keys to raise awareness of sea turtles and the need to protect them. Loggerhead sea turtles are a threatened species.
