Each year, thousands of dollars in valuables unclaimed by their owners get sent to the state. From watches to gold, crystals, and even sports trading cards -- they've all been found in safe deposit boxes and now they could be yours.
If no one claims the valuables after five years, they go up for auction. This weekend, you can make your bids at the state Unclaimed Property Auction at the Tampa Marriott Westshore. A preview is set for Aug. 12. The auction will be held on the 13th.
The money made on each item goes into a state account, but owners can claim their cut. And here's some advice: If you rent a safe deposit box, keep track of what you put inside it and make sure your address and your account are current.
