TAMPA, Fla. -- Some Florida cities say federal and state gun laws are not enough, and some mayors want to be able to make their own gun laws.

In the wake of the Parkland shooting, 10 cities are suing the state so local municipalities can make their own gun laws without facing punishment.

The cities that have joined in the lawsuit are all in South Florida, including Weston, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens and Pompano Beach.

Currently, Florida state law says that it's illegal for city and county lawmakers to enact gun laws.

Turns out Tallahassee has had sole control over gun laws since 1987, but in 2011, they decided to make it even stricter. As it stands now, a local politician trying to change gun laws in his or her municipality could be fined up to $5,000 or even removed from office.

In March, Hillsborough County Commissioner Les Miller filed a motion to ban the sale of assault weapons. It went nowhere and a Florida League of Cities spokesperson explained Miller probably wouldn't receive any penalty. In fact, the state has never actually enforced this law.
